An array of “Learn to” programs exist on "The Fastest Ice on Earth" at the Utah Olympic Oval where Olympians broke world records and earned gold medals.  Learn to Skate at the Utah Olympic Oval is proud to offer the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program.  U.S. Figure Skating is the official national governing body of skating on ice as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the International Skating Union (I.S.U.) and the Basic Skills Program is approved by the Professional Skaters Association (PSA), the recognized authority in coaching education and accreditation.

Basic Skills class curriculum is goal oriented and progressive.  If this is your first Learn to Skate class you must enroll in Basic Skills for Beginners Snowplow Sam 1 (ages 3-5), Basic 1 (ages 6-15), or Adult 1 (ages 16 & up).  No previous experience is necessary and you may enroll any time space is available and a minimum of 4 classes remain in the session.

You should arrive at least 30 minutes early for your first class in order to check-in and find the right sized skates before class starts.  Skates should be a snug fit and there should not be any loose or dangling laces.  Dress for warmth (layers are best) and wear non-restrictive clothing.  Don’t forget knee-high socks and gloves

  • Classes are held year-round either twice a week on Tuesday & Thursday for three weeks or once a week on Saturday for six weeks.
  • Skaters in Basic Skills for Beginners (Snowplow Sam 1-3, Basic 1-4, Adult 1-4) participate in six 45 minute class sessions consisting of 30 minutes instruction and 15 minutes practice time.
  • Skaters in Advanced Bridge Program (Basic 5-8 and Free Skate 1-6) participate in six one-hour class sessions consisting of 15 minutes on-ice warm up/practice time, 30 minutes on-ice and 15 minutes off-ice instruction.
  • Classes are taught by registered U.S Figure Skating Registered Coaches and Basic Skills Instructors providing expert instruction.
  • Not all ages and levels are taught at all class times. Look for class time options for each level below.  The complete schedule of classes for the current season is printed in the Ice Skating Lessons brochure.
  • If you are interested in Learn to Play Hockey or Learn to Speed Skate, you can sign up for them after passing the Basic Skills for Beginners Basic 2 or Adult 2 level.
  • Cost is only $50 ($10 discount will be applied for early registration, before the first day of class).
  • An annual registration fee of $13.00 is paid per student through guest services or on-line.  Registration period is July 1-June 30.  The many benefits that the skater receives are listed in the Ice Skating Lessons brochure in the pricing section.
  • Rental skates and helmets (required for ages 8 and under) are included in cost.
