(What you need to know about testing and competing)
In figure skating you must pass certain tests in order to compete. The skaters that are in the Olympic Games have completed their senior tests. The four areas or disciplines of skating are men’s free skate, women’s free skate, pair’s free skate, and pair’s ice dancing. Each discipline has various levels of testing. In free skating there are two elements to the test, compulsory moves, and free skate. A panel of trained and qualified judges watches the skater as they perform these two tests. The compulsory moves, called “Moves in the Field” consist of various turns and footwork placed in precise patterns. If the skater passes this portion of the test, they are then eligible to test their free skate, which consists of various required spins, footwork, and jumps set to music. Pair skating is similar to free skating, although both members must complete the elements in unison. Ice dancing is very similar to ballroom dancing, except that it is on the ice. The difficulty of the dances increases as you pass each level.
Many people begin their instruction in Learn to Skate programs. However, it is not necessary to complete this program to take the first test, although it does help. In order to take a test you must have the signature of a coach, which basically states that you are prepared to take the test. There are eight tests required to reach the Senior Gold level. They are:
Pre-Preliminary
Preliminary
Pre-Juvenile
Juvenile
Intermediate
Novice
Junior
Senior
Adult skaters have a competitive track available all the way to Adult Nationals. There are four tests required to reach the Adult Gold level. They are:
Pre-Bronze
Bronze
Silver
Gold
Skaters must be Full Club Members of a U.S. Figure Skating Member Club to be eligible to take the above tests. The home club at the Oval is Utah Oval Figure Skating Club. There are many benefits to joining, whether testing or not. Club members develop lasting friendships and camaraderie. Members participate in club activities and club ice time reserved just for them. Members perform in shows, recitals and exhibitions representing their Club. Oval FSC members and board of directors strive to maintain a positive atmosphere and provide opportunity to our skaters through many volunteer hours by parent’s, skaters and coaches dedicated to making a difference. Information on joining Utah Oval Figure Skating Club is posted on the figure skating bulletin board located in the downstairs tunnel on the way to the ice and available at guest services.
